What to Expect

The SAP process is structured by federal regulation. Your recommendations are individualized, but the core steps are consistent.

1

Initial evaluation

The evaluation reviews the violation, substance-use history, relevant circumstances, and appropriate next steps.

2

Education or treatment

You will receive written recommendations for education, treatment, or both. You are responsible for completing them with an appropriate provider.

3

Follow-up evaluation

After completion, the SAP evaluates whether you successfully complied and prepares the required follow-up documentation.

What the SAP does—and does not do

The SAP evaluates compliance and establishes a follow-up testing plan when required. The SAP does not conduct the return-to-duty drug or alcohol test and does not decide whether an employer places an employee back into a safety-sensitive position.

Review 49 CFR Part 40 on the U.S. Department of Transportation website.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the process take?

The timeline depends on the recommendations and how quickly they are completed. Payment or scheduling does not guarantee a rapid or favorable outcome.

Can the evaluation be virtual?

Yes. Separate virtual and in-person appointment types are available. Virtual appointments use Google Meet and require a private location, working camera, and reliable internet connection.

Does the $450 include treatment?

No. The package covers SAP evaluation services. Any education, treatment, laboratory testing, or other services provided elsewhere are separate.

Can I return to work after the follow-up evaluation?

The SAP determines whether you successfully complied with recommendations. The employer decides whether and when to return an employee to safety-sensitive duties, subject to applicable testing and regulations.
